Contending for the Faith in the Last Days – A Jude 1:3,7 Expository Study by W.F. Kumuyi
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints… Even as Sodom and Gomorrha… are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” – Jude 1:3,7 (KJV)
In this powerful exposition by Pastor (Dr) W.F. Kumuyi, believers are warned of the dangers of apostasy infiltrating the church, comparing present-day compromises to the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah. The message calls on Christians to stay vigilant, pure, and firmly rooted in the full counsel of God’s Word, contending earnestly for the faith that was once delivered to the saints.

1. Preserving the Faith from the Filthiness of Sodom
(i) Perceiving the Overflowing Filthiness of Sodom
Sodom represents the world’s pollution. From fornication to pride, ambition to materialism, the sins of Sodom still surround believers today. Scripture reminds us in Romans 1:28-32 that these sins persist because people reject God’s knowledge.
(ii) Preventing the Ever-Spreading Foolishness of Sodom
God’s judgment on Sodom wasn’t just due to immorality, but pride and neglect of the needy (Ezekiel 16:46-52). Even in today’s Church, this ever-spreading foolishness must be resisted.
(iii) Previewing the Ever-Burning Fire on Sodom
The judgment on Sodom is a warning to all generations. As emphasized in 2 Peter 2:6-20, those who once escaped corruption but return to sin face graver consequences. These are “spots” in the Church’s feasts (Jude 1:12-13).

2. Perceiving the Faith in the Fullness of Scripture
(i) Proclaiming the Faith for the Faithfulness of the Saints
The “faith” refers to the entire body of doctrine revealed by Christ and the apostles: salvation, holiness, restitution, rapture, and more. Acts 6:7 records that many priests became “obedient to the faith.”
(ii) Preventing the Faithful from Falling in Sodom
Philippians 1:27-30 urges believers to live lives consistent with the gospel. It is by continuing in the faith (Colossians 1:21-23) that saints are kept from falling. Apostasy comes by departing from sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:1-2).
(iii) Preaching the Faith in Faithfulness to the Saviour
Paul’s testimony in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 shows us that contending for the faith involves faithful preaching and endurance until the end.

3. Protecting the Faithful from the Fire of Sodom
(i) Escaping the Fleshly Fire of Sodom
Romans 1:26-27 exposes the vile affections that led to the downfall of Sodom. Sexual perversion is rampant in modern culture, and only faith in Christ can deliver from its bondage.
(ii) Fully Established in the Faith of the Son
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8-9). Strange doctrines abound, but we must hold to Christ’s unchanging truth.
(iii) Finally Enlisted among the Faithful Followers of the Shepherd
Jesus, our Great Shepherd, equips us to do His will (Hebrews 13:20-21). Revelation 17:14 promises that the faithful will overcome with Him in the end.
