Lesson 45 The Blessing Of The Tribes And Death Of Moses

Lesson 30, Children Search, Conditions for blessings and curses

TEXT: Leviticus 26:1-46

God gave several commandments to the children of Israel when It’s brought them out of the land of Egypt; one of such, is the focus of this study. “Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 26:1). God told Moses to warn the children of Israel against idolatry. This was necessary because:

(i) They were used to the idolatrous practices of Egypt.

(ii) They were passing through idolatrous nations on their way to the Promised Land.

(iii) There were mixed multitudes among them who could introduce them to strange practices (Exodus 12:38).

(iv) The surrounding sinful nations in the Promised Land might want to influence them. God had to warn them not to make friends with such wicked nations or learn their ways. He also told them that obedience to His commandments was the condition for enjoying His blessings while disobedience will bring punishment and great suffering. You must choose to obey God so as to enjoy His promised blessings.

  1. CONDITIONS FOR BLESSINGS: Leviticus 26:1-13; Deuteronomy 28:1-13.

God wants every child to obey His word. His instruction to Moses was clear: “If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit” (Leviticus 26:3,4). As children of God, we have a part to play in order to enjoy the blessings of God. The word of God says, “… to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams” (1 Samuel 15:22b). Obedience to God’s instructions as stated in the Bible is very important as we run the race to heaven. The commandment of God to the Israelites includes the following: one, “Ye shall make no idols nor graven image, …” God hates idolatry and every child of God must run away from it (1 Corinthians 10:14). Two, “Ye shall keep the sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary …” In the new covenant, every Sunday is regarded as the Lord’s Day, a day set aside to worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth (Revelation 1:10). God’s sanctuary is our place of worship and our bodies are the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19). When we keep these commandments, we will enjoy the following blessings:

(a) Abundance of the fruits of the earth.

(b) Unlimited and continuous supply of all our needs.

(c) Peace and divine protection. God promised them: “And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land” (Leviticus 26:6) God is faithful to His word. Christian boys and girls are instructed to be faithful to God so that they can enjoy divine security (Psalms 23:4; 91:10-12).

(d) Victory and success. Children who are obedient to God’s word need not fear the outcome of examinations because the God of Daniel is their God, “And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm” (Daniel 1:20).

(e) Favour and presence of God; “And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people” (Leviticus 26:11,12). The presence of God is always with His children to guide, protect and keep them from all evil (Matthew 28:20). God will never leave nor forsake you. Only believe and obey His word.

  1. CURSES FOR DISOBEDIENCE: Leviticus 26:14-39; Deuteronomy 27:13-26; 28:15-68; Jeremiah 12:17

God dislikes disobedience. Children who disobey God will not go unpunished (Leviticus 26:14-16). God will not punish us for the sins committed by someone else. “…the soul that sinneth, it shall die!” (Ezekiel 18:2-4). Moses plainly declared the warnings from God to the hearing of the children of Israel. Just as God pronounced the blessings on the obedient, He also pronounced curses on the disobedient. Christian boys and girls must be careful not to invite the wrath of God upon their lives. When God brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, He made a covenant with them, that He would bring them into the Promised Land, but they must serve Him in holiness. Unfortunately, many of the children of Israel who left Egypt and saw all the wonders of God, broke this covenant and they were punished by God (Deuteronomy 4:23,24). A covenant is a two-way agreement. We have our part to play and God has His part to play. But man sometimes fail on his own part. God warned that if they do not obey Him, He would bring evil upon them as punishment. There is nothing like eternal security in the kingdom of God (1 Samuel 2:30). “Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished …” (Proverbs 11:21). Those who were disobedient to God among the children of Israel suffered one punishment or the other and the word of God has not changed. God still punishes sin among His children. The Bible has records of people who were punished for their sins of disobedience: Cain (Genesis 4:9-13), Lot’s wife (Genesis 19:26), Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10:1,2), Miriam (Numbers 12:1-10), Korah, Dathan and Abiram (Numbers 16:31-33), Achan (Joshua 7:1,24-26), sons of Eli (1 Samuel 2:12-16; 4:11), Saul (1 Chronicles 10:13), Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-10). The good news is that, there is always opportunity to repent as long as the disobedient is still alive. Now that you have the opportunity, do not wait like these bad examples before it is too late.

  1. CALL TO REPENTANCE AND RESTORATION: Leviticus 26:40-46; 2 Chronicles 7:14; Jeremiah 18:8

God will show His mercy to all boys and girls who seek His face in repentance. Disobedience and all kinds of sin separate us from God. Necessary conditions for restoration must be fulfilled before one can be brought back into enjoying the blessings of God. There is need for children who have gone into sin to humble themselves in repentance and stop doing bad things. In the New Testament period, repentance from sin and faith in the atoning blood of Jesus Christ are required for one to be saved. Therefore, sinners must ask for God’s forgiveness and cleansing in the blood of Jesus. They should invite Him into their hearts as Saviour and Lord. They must continue to live a holy life and follow Christ to the end.
