Speaking in Tongues: Baptism in the Holy Ghost

The practice of speaking in tongues is often associated with the Baptism in the Holy Ghost, which is an endowment of power for the sanctified believer.

This experience is described in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament. When believers receive this “gift of the Holy Ghost,” they may speak in languages that they did not learn, which is understood as speaking in tongues.

The tongues spoken can include existing languages of the world or unknown languages.

In Acts 2:4-11, we see an example where the apostles spoke in different languages, and people from various nations understood them. This incident demonstrates that speaking in tongues can indeed be a miraculous manifestation involving known languages.

However, there is also a component of speaking in unknown tongues or a heavenly language, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 14:2, where it states:

– “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” (1 Corinthians 14:2, KJV)

The purpose of speaking in tongues can vary—sometimes it is for personal edification, while at other times it serves as a sign for unbelievers. It is important to note that the Spirit gives utterance, and believers are not instructed to learn how to speak in tongues; it is a divine manifestation.

In summary,  depending on the context and purpose as determined by the Holy Spirit.
