GHS 172 : When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder Lyrics
GHS 172, “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder,” is one of the most confident and jubilant second-coming hymns in the evangelical tradition. Written by James M. Black after an experience at a prayer meeting when a young girl failed to answer the roll call, the hymn was born from a question: what will it mean if my name is called on that final day? The answer became this song: the trumpet will sound, time will end, the dead in Christ will rise, and the saved of earth will gather on the other shore. And the singer’s answer to all of this is a clear, personal declaration: I’ll be there.
This hymn appears as number 172 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa, and its third stanza connects the hope of that day to the urgency of faithful labour in the present.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 172: When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder
- When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more, And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair; When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
When the roll is called up yonder, When the roll is called up yonder, When the roll is called up yonder, When the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
-
On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise, And the glory of His resurrection share; When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
-
Let us labour for the Master from the dawn till setting sun, Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care, Then, when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.
