DCLM Youths Search of Scriptures Lesson 53 – Jethro Counsels Moses
LESSON 53
Exodus 18:1-27
Moses was taking care of the sheep of Jethro his father-in-law when he received the call of God to go and deliver the children of Israel from their suffering in Egypt. Then, he went to his father-in-law Jethro, to take permission to go back to his people, the Israelites in Egypt. As friends of Jesus, we must take proper permission from our parents and teachers before going anywhere. Moses then left his father-in-law, his wife, his two children, and the sheep he had been caring for to obey the greater call of God.
In our study today, Jethro brought Zipporah Moses’ wife and his two children so that his family would stay together. Moses was very happy and greeted his father-in-law with respect. Saved children should respect elders the following day when Moses sat down to counsel the people, Jethro saw the way Moses was handling the work of God alone, and he hereby advised him to train others to assist him in the work of God. Our parents and pastors cannot do the work of God alone. As friends of Jesus, we should be willing to join them in working for God.
1. REUNION OF MOSES WITH HIS FAMILY
Exodus 18:1-7; 2:15-22
When God called Moses to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt. He took his wife and children along. Later, he had to take them back to Jethro, his father-in-law so that he could face God’s Work. Moses knew that his father-in-law would take care of them properly while he did God’s business. After the deliverance from Egypt, the whole earth heard about the great things God had done for Israel. Jethro also heard and was glad.
For this reason, he came with Moses’ wife and children to rejoice with God’s people, Children whose parents are sent on mission work by God, should support their parents with prayers, be of good conduct and obey the word of God. When you are faithful, God will bless the ministry of your parents a make you enjoy a happy family life. It’s was a time of joyful re-union and fellowship for Moses, Zipporah’s wife Gershom, and Eliezer, his children. God’s desire for us is to have a happy family. Do not do anything that will cause your parents’ sorrow. Make them happy by obeying them and the word of God.
- RECALL OF GOD’S GREAT WORKS AMONG HIS PEOPLE
Exodus 188-12; Psalm 92 1-5
Moses shared the testimonies concerning the goodness of God to Israel and Jethro rejoiced and worshiped the God of Israel after listening to the testimonies. As friends of Jesus, it is good to share testimonies in the church and among your friends concerning your salvation, protection of God over you and your family, provision, success in examination, and so on When you share your testimony with others, you are:
(a) Giving glory to God
(b) Lifting up the faith of others
(c) Encouraging others to put their trust in God
(d) Showing gratitude to God, which makes you receive more of His blessings. Always try to share your testimony with others.
- RIGHT COUNSEL FROM JETHRO TO MOSES
Exodus 18: 13-27, Proverbs 1:5; 15:22
Moses as the leader of God’s people sat down the day following Jethro s arrival to do the work of God, unlike many children who will not go to church or house fellowship because their uncles, Aunts, or other relatives came to visit them, we should not allow any visitor to hinder us from going to church. Such visitors should follow us to worship the Lord. As Jethro watched Moses’ method 01 doing the work of God, he observed some faults. Moses sat down to judge the people from morning till night.
Jethro saw that the stress was too much for him and if nothing was done urgently, Moses could fall sick and die He advised Moses to tram other elders of Israel to Join him in the work Our leaders in the church cannot do the work of God alone, they need children who will serve as choristers, ushers, and evangelists to preach to other children.
However such children must be born again before they can work for God Children must prayerfully seek and follow the good ads-ice of godly parents and teachers Moses did not argue with Jethro He accepted his good advice and the work was shared among the faithful elders in Israel Good counsel will lead you to make a right choice. Above all, study God’s word at all times because it is the map that leads us to the right path. We should read our Bible and pray to God daily for guidance.
