GHS 100 : Christ, Our Mighty Captain Lyrics
GHS 100, “Christ, Our Mighty Captain,” is a marching hymn that places Christ at the head of the Church’s spiritual battle and calls every believer to fall in behind Him. The hymn acknowledges the ferocity of the enemy’s onslaughts, the long duration of the fight, and the moments when the purpose behind the struggle is not fully clear, but it answers every concern with the same confidence: we follow all the way because our Captain leads and our King wins.
The refrain, “Forward! forward! ’tis the Lord’s command,” is one of the most energetic refrains in the GHS collection, capturing the Church not as a people retreating from the world but as one pressing deeper into the battle with assurance of final victory. This hymn appears as number 100 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 100: Christ, Our Mighty Captain
- Christ, our mighty Captain, leads against the foe; We will never falter when He bids us go; Tho’ His righteous purpose we may never know, Yet we’ll follow all the way.
Forward! forward! ’tis the Lord’s command, Forward! forward! to the promised land; Forward! forward! let the chorus ring: We are sure to win with Christ our King!
-
Satan’s fearful onslaughts cannot make us yield, While we trust in Christ, our Buckler and our Shield; Pressing ever on — the Spirit’s sword we wield, And we follow all the way.
-
Let our glorious banner ever be unfurled — From its mighty stronghold evil shall be hurled; Christ, our mighty Captain, overcomes the world, And we follow all the way.
-
Fierce the battle rages, but ’twill not be long, Then triumphant shall we join the blessed throng, Joyfully uniting in the victor’s song — If we follow all the way.
