Children Search Lesson 50 Mission of The Seventy
Text: Luke 10:1-24
Our Lord Jesus Christ’s purpose on earth is to seek and save the lost. He went from one place to another preaching the gospel. In Luke chapter 9, He sent out His twelve disciples to go and tell others about the good news of the kingdom. He knew that the work was much, therefore, He decided to send another seventy of His followers to go out again and preach. Today, Christian boys and girls are followers of Jesus Christ. As followers of Jesus, we are given an important assignment known as “The Great Commission” (Mark 16:15-20). However, this assignment is not for everybody. It is only for those who have become friends of Jesus through repentance and faith in Christ.
In our Bible passage, we are given specific instructions on how to carry out the great commission. We are to be peaceful, loving and be mindful of the purpose for which we are sent out. The disciples who first received these instructions simply did what Jesus asked them to do. God worked wonders among them. They were all filled with joy and came back to testify of the great success they had. As we also respond positively and carry out this great mission, we shall also rejoice and experience good success.
1.MISSION AND COMMISSION OF THE SEVENTY:
Luke 10:1-11; Matthew 10:5-16; Mark 16:15
Our Lord Jesus appointed seventy other Christians and sent them to go two by two into every place and city to share the good news of the Kingdom. This is the mission of the seventy, and our own mission too as friends of Jesus. The need for the preaching of the gospel is more today than it was when Jesus was on earth. This is because the population of the world has increased tremendously. Then the activities of Satan also is increasing every day.
His goal is to deceive many souls and lead them to hell-fire. Therefore, Jesus has commissioned not only the seventy but everyone (men, women, boys and girls) that has received pardon and forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. It is our duty to share the love of Christ to sinners and lead them to the Saviour.
As you go in obedience to Christ’s command, you must take note of the following: Be a lamb among wolves. This means you must be gentle and humble. Be a peacemaker. Gently persuade sinners who are stubborn. Preach Jesus only. As you go, Jesus will be with you, and you will come back rejoicing.
2.MOTIVE OF CHRIST FOR THE GREAT COMMISSION:
Luke 10:1,2; Matthew 9:35-38; 2 Timothy 4:1-4; 2 Peter 3:9
The work of winning sinners to Christ is a great one. Jesus knew that He has a short time on earth for the work. This was the reason He sent out His disciples two by two.
(i) Sinners who die in their sin will be eternally lost. God is not willing that sinners should perish (2 Peter 3:9).
(ii) Sinners need people to show them the way of salvation.
(iii) Many sinners will be saved from the punishment of hell when friends of Jesus do their work.
(iv) The time is short and the judgment of God is coming upon disobedient and unrepentant sinners.
Therefore, friends of Jesus must arise and obey this great commission. This can be accomplished through:
(i) The two-by-two principles – pairing of friends of Jesus for the purpose of reaching out with the gospel.
(ii) Literature evangelism – tracts distribution and sharing of other Christian literature.
(iii) Praying for labourers in the vineyard of God.
(iv) Praying for the unsaved to be saved. God will reward all our efforts.
3.MANIFOLD BENEFITS OF PREACHING THE GOSPEL: Luke 10:17-24; 15:7,10; Daniel 12:3
The disciples went out in obedience to the instruction of Christ. The Lord worked with them through signs and wonders. They came back rejoicing, saying, “Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name“. All born-again Christians who go out to preach the gospel have the promise of God to enjoy. Isaiah 55:11 says, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it“. As you obey, you too will have a testimony.
If you are still a sinner, the Lord wants you to surrender your life to Him as you confess your sins. Ask for forgiveness and cleansing in the blood of Jesus. Forsake your sins, invite Jesus into your heart and live a holy life. Pray for the grace of God to help you as you promise to give your life and time to preach the gospel.
