GHS 111 : Rescue The Perishing Lyrics

GHS 111, “Rescue The Perishing,” is one of the most urgently worded evangelism hymns in the Christian songbook. Written by Fanny Crosby after a visit to a mission in New York where she spoke to working men about their souls, the hymn gives the Church a stark and honest picture of the condition of those outside Christ: perishing, dying, fallen, erring, crushed by the tempter. And to that picture it gives an equally direct response: rescue, care, weep, lift up, tell them.

The hymn does not soften the urgency or dress it in comfortable language. It treats soul-winning as rescue work, which is exactly what it is. This hymn appears as number 111 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa, and it is a fitting opening or closing hymn for any evangelism outreach.

Hymn Lyrics – GHS 111: Rescue The Perishing

  1. Rescue the perishing, Care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave; Weep o’er the erring one, Lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus, the Mighty to save.

Rescue the perishing, Care for the dying; Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.

  1. Though they are slighting Him, Still He is waiting, Waiting the penitent child to receive. Plead with them earnestly, plead with them gently, He will forgive if they only believe.

  2. Down in the human heart, Crushed by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving hand, Wakened by kindness, Chords that were broken will vibrate once more.

  3. Rescue the perishing, Duty demands it; Strength for thy labour the Lord will provide; Back to the narrow way Patiently win them; Tell the poor wanderer a Saviour has died.
