GHS 126 : Great God Of Wonders Lyrics
GHS 126, “Great God Of Wonders,” is a hymn of worship that surveys all of God’s works and concludes that none of them compares to His pardoning grace. Written by Samuel Davies in the eighteenth century, the hymn opens by acknowledging that God’s ways are full of wonders, then immediately singles out the most astonishing of all: that an offended God would pardon crimes of deepest dye, that a holy God would bring rebels near through the blood of Jesus, that a righteous God would produce a miracle of love so strange and matchless that the only fitting response is grateful praise filling the whole earth.
The repeated question in the refrain, “Who is a pardoning God like Thee?” is not a real question but a declaration of wonder. This hymn appears as number 126 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 126: Great God Of Wonders
- Great God of wonders! all Thy ways Display the attributes divine; But countless acts of pard’ning grace Beyond Thine other wonders shine:
Who is a pard’ning God like Thee? Or who has grace so rich and free?
-
In wonder lost, with trembling joy We take the pardon of our God: Pardon for crimes of deepest dye, A pardon bought with Jesus blood.
-
Pardon — from an offended God! Pardon — for sins of deepest dye! Pardon — bestowed through Jesus’ blood! Pardon — that brings the rebel nigh!
-
O may this strange, this matchless grace, This God-like miracle of love, Fill the wide earth with grateful praise, As now it fills the choirs above!
