GHS 136 : At Calvary Lyrics
GHS 136, “At Calvary,” is a personal conversion testimony hymn that traces the journey of a soul from years of careless pride to the moment of grace found at the cross. Written by William R. Newell, the hymn opens honestly: years spent in vanity, not knowing, not caring, while the Saviour was dying for that very soul. Then the Word of God broke through, sin was exposed, guilt overwhelmed the heart, and the soul turned in its distress to Calvary, where mercy was great, grace was free, and pardon was multiplied.
The closing stanzas move from the past moment of salvation to a present life of glad ownership of Christ as King and a soul that can only sing of Calvary. This hymn appears as number 136 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 136: At Calvary
- Years I spent in vanity and pride, Caring not my Lord was crucified, Knowing not it was for me He died On Calvary.
Mercy there was great and grace was free, Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burden’d soul found liberty, At Calvary.
-
By God’s word at last my sin I learned, Then I trembled at the law I’d spurned, Till my guilty soul, imploring turned To Calvary.
-
Now I’ve given to Jesus everything, Now I gladly own Him as my King, Now my raptured soul can only sing Of Calvary.
-
Oh! the love that drew salvation’s plan, Oh! the grace that brought it down to man, Oh! the mighty gulf that God did span At Calvary.
