GHS 149 : Farther Along Lyrics

GHS 149, “Farther Along,” is a hymn of patient trust for believers who are wrestling with the hardest question faith faces: why do the righteous suffer while the wicked seem to prosper? The hymn does not offer a neat answer or a quick resolution. Instead, it makes an honest admission of the confusion and then gives the only answer that genuinely satisfies: farther along, we will know and we will understand. The present moment is not the whole story. The final chapter has not been written yet, and when Christ comes in glory, the things that were incomprehensible will become plain.

This hymn appears as number 149 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa, and it speaks most powerfully to those who are in the middle of seasons that make no sense.

Hymn Lyrics – GHS 149: Farther Along

  1. Tempted and tried we’re oft made to wonder Why it should be thus all the day long, While there are others living about us, Never molested tho’ in the wrong.

Farther along we’ll know all about it, Farther along we’ll understand why; Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine, We’ll understand it all by and by.

  1. When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder why others prosper, Living so wicked year after year.

  2. Faithful till death said our loving Master, A few more days to labour and wait; Toils of the road will then seem as nothing, As we sweep thru the beautiful gate.

  3. When we see Jesus coming in glory, When He comes from His home in the sky; Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion, We’ll understand it all by and by.
