GHS 154 : Give Me A Double Portion Lyrics
GHS 154, “Give Me A Double Portion,” is a prayer hymn drawn directly from the story of Elisha’s request to Elijah in 2 Kings 2:9. When Elijah asked what he should do for Elisha before he was taken up, Elisha’s answer was bold and deliberate: a double portion of your spirit. The hymn takes that same boldness into prayer, recognising that what is available from God in a moment of ordinary faith is not always enough for the scale of the work that needs to be done. The fight must be won, and the believer needs more than just daily sustenance; they need an extraordinary portion of God’s power.
This hymn appears as number 154 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa, and it is a favourite in intercessory prayer sessions and revival services.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 154: Give Me A Double Portion
- Long ago in days of old, stood a man of God we’re told, As he talked to Elijah that day; His request he did repeat, standing at Elijah’s feet, “A double portion” I can hear him say.
Give me, Lord, a double portion, pour Thy Spirit on me, Thru eyes of faith Thy wondrous works I can see; But I need Thy helping hand, In this troubled, sinful land, Give me, Lord, a double portion from Thee.
-
As Elijah stood that day, to Elisha he did say, “Ask me what I shall do unto thee;” And Elisha then replied, walking at Elijah’s side, “A double portion, let it fall on me.”
-
Lord, I always to Thee pray, just for strength from day to day, But I see there’s so much to be done, That I have to kneel anew and this favour ask of You, A double portion — this fight must be won.
