MAJOR FEASTS AND ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE

LESSON 20 RESTATEMENT OF GOD’S COMMANDMENTS

Deuteronomy 5:1-33; 6:1-25

Commandments are authoritative directions or instructions to do something. In this situation, they are God-given rules. On the other hand, restatement means repetition or reaffirmation of something. Our study, therefore, centers on the reaffirmation of God’s word to the children of Israel. When people grow old and are about to depart from this world, they sometimes call their family members or loved ones together and repeat certain issues or instructions they had shared with them before. This is always done to remind and warn those concerned of the danger of disobeying the earlier given instructions. David did this to Solomon, by giving him instructions concerning what he should continue to do if God was to continue to bless him (1 Kings 2:1-4). In our text, Moses was about to die, so he called the children of Israel and repeated the commandments of God to them. The reason for this was for Israel to “learn and keep and do them. He also told them they need to be obedient to the word of God always. Some people say, “repetition makes for emphasis importance“. This is why it is important for friends of Jesus to cultivate the habit of reading and meditating God’s word every day. Through this, they will prosper and have good success (Joshua 1:8).

  1. GOD’S UNCHANGING COMMANDMENTS RESTATED: Deuteronomy 5:1-33; Psalm 119:89,160; Luke 21:32-33; 1 Peter1:24-25

The word of God is God Himself. As He does not change, so His word does not change too. God did not want the children of Israel to worship idols like the Canaanites. He wanted Israel to be a special nation. Moses, the servant of God, knowing how precious God’s word is, said, “For what nation is there so great that hath statutes and so righteous as all this judgment’s law, which I set before you this day?” After the children of Israel left Egypt and were on their way to Canaan, God gave them commandments through Moses, their leader. These commandments were written by God on two tables of stone. A lot of things had happened since these commandments were given. Many of that generation had died in the wilderness. On the other hand, many children had been born. This new generation ought to hear and learn God’s word so that they will not follow the ways of those that perished. That was why he gave them detailed instructions on how to live and worship God. These instructions are also known as the ten (10) commandments. These commandments can be divided into two parts: commandments 1-4 teach us how to relate with God while commandments 5-10 teach us how we should relate with people around us.

This word of God has not changed. Today, the word of God is the Holy Bible and it is available for us. It is important we listen when it is being taught, learn from it, hide the commandment in our heart, obey and share it with others. This is the only way we can have fellowship with God. God will be pleased with us and bless us if we obey all His commandments. Obedience to His word always brings blessings

  1. GODLY COUNSELS THROUGH GOD’S WORD:

Deuteronomy 6:1-25; Psalms 1:1 3; 119:1-9,105

Moses was a great teacher. He knew that constant study of God’s word refreshes the memory and increases knowledge and understanding. It is good to learn, keep and obey the commandments of God. The children of Israel were not only commanded to learn, keep and do the commandments of God, they were to teach them diligently to their children. When the parents and their children learn and do God’s command together, then God’s goodness and faithfulness will continue to increase in the family and in the nation. It is not enough to have the Bible in our bag and even take it to church. We must spend time to study it. It is not possible to obey a command or instruction you do not know. What good will it do to you if you have all the required textbooks and never study them? You should pay more attention to the study of the eternal word of God. This is a way to attract God’s great blessings into your life.

  1. GLORIOUS REWARDS FOR OBEYING COMMANDMENTS: GOD’S

Deuteronomy 6:1,3,24,25; Genesis 22:18; Exodus 15:26; Joshua 1:8.

The reward for obeying God’s word is glorious. Obedience to God’s instructions is the path that will lead us to meet Christ in glory. So, it is not enough to study it. Moses declared the glorious reward of obeying God’s on came the commandment and great regret that would come on Israel if they turn away from following the Lord. The same punishment that inhabitants of Canaan would equally come on them if they disobeyed the instructions from God (Deuteronomy 8:19,20).

Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, Samuel, Timothy, Rhoda and a lot of others obeyed God. They were greatly blessed and now they are all in heaven. Likewise, there are great blessings for you too if you will obey God’s word continually. These blessings include answers to prayers, divine protection, promotion, long life, healing and health and eternal life with Jesus in heaven.

Children who obey Jesus and follow Him to the end shall inherit mansions prepared for them in heaven.
