Children, in our last lesson 62, we considered ”the Parable of the Ten Virgins and the Talent”. Today, to we considering ”Last Supper and Betrayal of Christ”.
Matthew 26:1-30, 36-68; Mark 14: 1-26, 32-65; Luke 22: 1-30, 35, 63-71.

And it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, Ye know that after two days are the feast of the Passover’ and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified” (Matthew 26:1). This passage Of the Bible is a prophecy by Christ Himself about His coming suffering and death on the cross. Jesus came into the world to do the will of His heavenly Father, which was to die on the cross and shed His blood for the remission of the sins of the world. This ‘will’ be summed up in John 3: 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life’’.
Jesus did all that he was sent to do. He went about doing good, saving sinners, healing the sick, setting the captives free and preparing saints for heaven. Now |He was about to conclude His assignment, chief of which was to die on the cross. a series of events took place before the crucifixion and burial of Christ. There started with the institution of the Lord’s supper, Followed by His betrayal and arrest. These are the two events we shall examine in this study.
INSTITUTION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER:
Matthew 26: 17-29; Mark 14:12-25; Luke 22:7-30; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Jesus spent the last days of His assignment on earth to teach His friends e sinners and life in God’s heavenly kingdom. When He finished His teaching, He knew that the time for His crucifixion was at hand. s He instructed His friends to prepare a place where they will observe the Passover. It was a deliberate plan by Christ to relate His death to the celebration of the Passover the world (John 1:29). The Passover meal was to be the last supper He would have with His disciples.
They gathered in the house of Caiaphas the high priest to plan how to arrest Jesus. Then by divine arrangement, a woman came to anoint Jesus with oil to prepare Him for His coming death and burial. All these events worked together to fulfil the purpose of God for sending His only begotten son to the earth. As they were taking the last meal, Jesus established what is now known as the Lord’s Supper. During the meal, Jesus introduced the new symbols of (i) Unleavened bread, representing His body that would be broken on the cross (ii) Wine. This is the fruit of the vine which also symbolises His blood that was shed for the
Jesus then commanded that the Church observe this fellowship of sharing until He comes. Jesus is coming again to take His friends to heaven where they will be in fellowship with Him forever. Regular participation in the Lord’s Supper will help us to put in remembrance all that Christ suffered for us. It will also help us to serve Him faithfully until He comes to take us home.
IMPORTANT TRUTHS ABOUT JESUS’ BETRAYAL AND ARREST:
Matthew Mark 14:18-21 ,32-52; Matthew 26: 14-16, 36-56; Luke 22: 1-6, 21-23, 39-53.
During the last meal with His disciples, Jesus revealed the person that would betray Him. Judas Iscariot who was one of the twelve disciples had earlier agreed with the religious rulers to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. The eleven others were not aware of his plan but Christ knew. He is the Omniscient God who knows and sees all that we plan. He told His friends that one of them would betray Him. They all became sorrowful and confused until Jesus identified the person. After the meal, Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray in agony. It was at this garden that Judas Iscariot led a large crowd with sword and clubs to arrest Jesus Christ. This was the beginning of Jesus’ suffering, trial and eventual crucifixion.
Judas Iscariot betrayed His Master because of greed and he later regretted his action. Therefore, he went and killed himself and went to hell. He had opportunity to repent but he did not. Jesus in His love wanted to help Judas Iscariot to tensile his militance and avoid hell, he, would not, listen because the of God be fulfilled. Although to that prophecy, it was because of covetousness and greed that that didn’t not available to fulfil the prophecy.
As a sinner, you roust repent while the door of God’s mercy open, not delay or waste the opportunity you have. Ask for forgiven% and cleans through the blood of Jesus. Accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour, stay with Jesus and obey His word. Do not betray Him but rather honour Him through your word, ways and work of faith.
3. INSTRUCTIVE LESSONS FOR FRIENDS OF JESUS:
Matthew 26:57-68; Mark 14:53-65; Luke 22:63-71, 1 Peter 2:21-25
From our Bible passages, we learnt that Jesus Christ was nearing the end of His earthly ministry. All that He did was in fulfilment of God’s plan and purpose for mankind. Have you accepted Jesus as your Saviour and Lord? Do not allow His suffering to be in vain. Therefore, as a sinner, you must realise your sinful state. Repent and confess all your sins to God. Ask for forgiveness and cleansing through His shed blood. Ask Him to be your Saviour, Lord and Friend.
Now as a friend of Jesus, there are important lessons for you to take to heart in this study.
There should be absolute obedience to Christ’s command on the Lord’s supper. Be a worthy partaker at every opportunity. Anything that will hinder you from being qualified for the Lord’s Supper can also hinder you from going with Jesus at the rapture. Therefore, live a holy life every day.
Beware of covetousness and greed. These bad traits sent Judas Iscariot to hell. Do not follow his example and never you betray Jesus by your actions and activities. Rather honour Him through your lifestyle.
Be a prayerful Christian. When Christ was in agony, He went to Gethsemane to pray while His disciples slept off. Prayer is the key that can solve all problems of life and draw you nearer to God.
Jesus was quiet and calm while He was being arrested and taken away to Caiaphas’s court. He did not pay back evil for evil but rather showed compassion to those that hurt Him. This is a great virtue that we must have. Always leave judgment or revenge to God. Do not fight your accusers or persecutors. God will fight for you.
As Jesus submitted to the will of His heavenly Father, so must we submit and obey the word of God at all times. There are great blessings for children who are obedient to God’s word.
