GHS 69 : Christ Be Beside Me Lyrics
GHS 69, “Christ Be Beside Me,” is a prayer of total encirclement, drawn from the ancient lorica (protective prayer) tradition of the Celtic church, most famously associated with St Patrick’s Breastplate. The hymn asks for Christ to surround the believer in every direction: beside, before, behind, within, below, above, on the right hand, on the left. It then extends the prayer outward to every person who might encounter the singer that day, asking that Christ would be in their thoughts, on their tongues, and in the very vision of their eyes and the hearing of their ears.
This hymn appears as number 69 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa, and it is a perfect prayer to sing at the beginning of any gathering or as a benediction.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 69: Christ Be Beside Me
-
Christ be beside me, Christ be before me, Christ be behind me — King of my heart; Christ be within me, Christ be below me, Christ be above me — never to part.
-
Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand, Christ all around me — shield in the strife; Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting, Christ in my rising — Light of my life.
-
Christ be in all hearts thinking about me, Christ be on all tongues telling of me; Christ be the vision in eyes that see me, In ears that hear me Christ ever be.
-
Christ be beside me, Christ be before me, Christ be behind me — King of my heart; Christ be within me, Christ be below me, Christ be above me — never to part.
