GHS 72 : The Solid Rock Lyrics
GHS 72, “The Solid Rock,” is one of the great doctrinal hymns of the Christian faith. Written by Edward Mote around 1834, the hymn is a complete and deliberate rejection of every false foundation for Christian hope. The singer dares not trust the sweetest frame, meaning even their own most sincere spiritual feelings or inner states. There is only one ground: the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ. The refrain gives the image of the Rock, and the contrast with sinking sand is borrowed from the Sermon on the Mount, making the hymn both a personal testimony and a sermon in miniature.
This hymn appears as number 72 in the Gospel Hymns and Songs (GHS) collection, used in Deeper Life Bible Church and related assemblies across West Africa, and it is one of the most theologically grounded hymns in the entire collection.
Hymn Lyrics – GHS 72: The Solid Rock
- My hope is built on nothing less, Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness, I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
-
When darkness seems to hide His face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the vale.
-
His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.
-
When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found; Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne.
